Ascension Island is the half-way stop on the journey between the UK and the Falkland Islands. Is is essentially a military island, bristling with information gathering antennae. However, the island has a great deal to offer those who wish to stay for a while. The sea is abundant in wildlife. Probably one of the best scuba-diving areas of the world. You can swim with tropical fish or watch the turtles lay their eggs. The scenery is unnerving. One half of the island is barren lava-covered landscape and the other is almost a lush green sub-tropical forest. It is an island of contrasts where you can bathe in crystal clear waters or hike across the moon.
We stayed for four days at the end of our first annual leave to the UK. We broke our journey back to experience the unique environment and the pictures below give a flavour of what we saw.
