Keith and Val's Falkland Islands

Bodie Creek Bridge & Darwin Cemetery

Bodie Creek is situated a few miles south of Goose Green (a nice easy off-road drive). In 1926 the bridge across Bodie Creek, built by the Falkland Islands Company, was opened. It was built to reduce the time taken to drive sheep from Lafonia to the shearing sheds in Goose Green, thereby avoiding a major detour around the inlet. The bridge is one of the southernmost suspension bridge in the world. Unfortunately it is no longer safe to cross but not too long ago Land Rovers used it regularly. Actually, it is still possible to walk across but don't tell anyone how I know!!

We stayed for a weekend in a self catering cottage attached to Darwin Lodge and paid one of several visits to the bridge. We also visited the Argentine Military Cemetery just to the north of Darwin. This contains the graves of Argentinians who fell during the 1982 conflict.
