For many years Goose Green was important as a centre for the sheep farming industry. Whilst the number of sheep on the Islands is still considerable, there are far less people employed on the farms as modernisation and mechanisation have taken over. The population of the 'camp' settlements has reduced significantly in recent years and the settlements are a shadow of their former status. Darwin is named after the naturalist, Charles Darwin; Goose Green probably has a more self-explanatory derivation!
The settlements, which are less than a mile apart, are situated on the narrow neck of land that joins the two sections of East Falkland, about an hour's drive from Stanley. The vast expanse of Lafonia lies to the South and has only recently been opened up by the expanding road network of the Islands. The farm used to be owned by the Falkland Islands Company but it is now owned by the Government and managed by Falkland Landholdings.
