Gypsy Cove is a 15 minute drive eastwards from Stanley; out towards Cape Pembroke. Between October and March each year it is home to a large colony of Magellenic (Jackass) Penguins. It can become very busy when one of the many cruise vessels which visit the Islands is in the harbour and Gypsy Cove is most people's first introduction to penguins. Magellanic Penguins nest in burrows underground in the peaty slopes of the cove and are very tame (see later pictures!)
Gypsy Cove has been designated a Wild Animal and Bird Sanctuary because of the variety of wildlife found here. The beaches at Gypsy Cove, Yorke Bay and nearby Surf Bay are typical of what can be found in many places throughout the Islands - luxurious white sand reminiscent of far more exotic places!
This was our first trip on the gravel/clay roads which are the basis of Falklands highways. A four-wheel drive is a necessity out of town, not a luxury (even on the roads!)
