Keith and Val's Falkland Islands

Port San Carlos

Port San Carlos is a two and a half hour drive from Stanley along the northen link-road. It is situated on the north bank of the San Carlos estuary, on the western coast of East Falkland. The road to Port San Carlos produces spectacular scenery ranging from the cascading 'stone-runs' on the slopes of Mount Kent to open-sky vistas and waterscapes. Although close to San Carlos (about 5 miles as the Albatross flies!) there is currently no road linking the two settlements. It is possible to drive across 'camp' but local knowledge (and significant off-road driving experience!) is needed.

The lodge at the settlement, known as the Pod, is used by visitors and locals alike as a base for fishing and for visiting the more remote areas of this part of East Falkland. The San Carlos River is one of the best known fishing sites on East Falkland. The current local record for sea-trout is almost 23lbs!
