Every year on the Saturday closest to Mid-Winters Day (or Mid-Summer's Day for those in the Northern Hemisphere) a sponsored swim takes place to raise money for local charities. Actually, the swim is more of a dip since, as you would imagine, the southern atlantic is somewhat chilly!! A surprising number of brave souls (or idiots depending upon your point of view) take part in this masochistic activity.
This year, following several days of deep lying snow and hard frosts, the temperatures were even lower than normal. As usual a large bonfire was lit on the beach to thaw out the frozen participants and the Globe Tavern made available mulled ale to warm the parts the bonfire could not reach. Val and myself would have taken part but we had to hold the towel and Bovril for Victoria who, as can be seen below, thoroughly enjoyed the experience!!
